Music

At First Lutheran we delight in creating community through singing together. The music in our worship is grounded in the Lutheran tradition and enriched by a diverse repertoire, pulling from many styles and genres.

Cynthia Niiler, our Director of Music, expertly leads the music program with professionalism and care. She holds degrees from Middlebury College in Vermont, as well as Luther Seminary and St. Olaf College in Minnesota. First Lutheran is blessed with a Hook & Hastings organ, original to our 1927 sanctuary and a Steinway Model B grand piano.

Adult Choir

The Chancel Choir is for older youth (post-confirmation) through older adults! We’d love to have you join us. Our choir is a group that:

Musically praises God and prays to God on behalf of the congregation.
Supports congregational singing
Perhaps most importantly: a group that gathers regularly to breathe together, sing together, and support each other.

We are small but mighty, singing a variety of styles ranging from SATB acapella to 2 part mixed depending on who is available on a given Sunday. We love singing interesting, meaningful music that works with our current group.

The choir sings in worship and rehearses about every other week from September through May. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 pm – 8:45 pm and Sunday mornings at 9:45 am.

Children's/Youth Choir

About twice a month during the Sunday morning Learning Hour we have choir time for our elementary and middle school youth. During this time we:

Have fun while learning about our voices and basic musicianship skills
Explore the music we use every week in worship—the hymns and the liturgy
Learn music to share in worship about every 6 weeks

Instrumentalists

Our brass ensemble plays for Reformation Sunday, Christmas Eve, and Easter. Other instrumentalists of all abilities play periodically throughout the year, with the choir, as special music, and especially for our pre-service music on Christmas Eve. We love encouraging musicians of all ages to share their gifts.
